In nothing more is the English genius for domesticity more notably declared than in the institution of this festival-almost one may call it-of afternoon tea...the mere chink of cups and saucers tunes the mind to happy repose. - George Gissing

…..

Have you ever wondered how the delights of Afternoon Tea originated?

It was in 1840 that afternoon tea was introduced to England, by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford (thank you Anna!). History has it that as her families evening meal was getting ‘fashionably’ later and later, she would become hungry at around 3pm or 4pm in the afternoon (we hear you!). So, the Duchess asked for a tray of tea, bread, and butter (sometime earlier the Earl of Sandwich had the inspired idea of putting filling between two slices of bread - genius). Soon becoming a habit of hers, she eventually started inviting her friends to enjoy it with her. This took off enormously and by 1880, upper class ladies made it an occasion by changing into long gowns, hats, and gloves.

While long gowns are not necessary when enjoying an Afternoon Tea at Alchemista Coffee, we still adopt the tradition of offering sandwiches, cakes, and scones served with clotted cream and jam – the only question left remaining is it the jam or cream first?

Look no further than Alchemisa Coffee as your venue for afternoon tea. Nestled in heart of the beautiful Norwich Lanes, we are here to welcome and look after you as you sit back, relax, and enjoy all we have on offer in our cosy and unique space.

Come along inside... We'll see if tea and buns can make the world a better place.’- Kenneth Grahame
